In this seminar course, we will go through topics related to the eye tracking for interaction applications. The course will be a mix of readings, and group work. Participants will be assigned topics on which they prepare a presentation and a summary of literature. After the course, students should be able to independently process state-of-the-art knowledge on a selected topic in eye tracking, create and deliver a presentation of the topic.
The core questions of the course are:
- What is the role of gaze in interactive technology?
- What are the applications of using gaze as an input method?
- What are the innovative ways to use eye movements for human computer interaction in real time?
- What are the advantages, disadvantages, tools, methods and principles of various gaze input techniques?
The aim of the course is to familiarized students with various interactive methods in eye tracking. After the course, the students are expected:
- to identify various interactive methods, their principles and applicability in eye tracking
- to understand the factors affecting the eye movements
- to critically evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of different gaze techniques for input
The course is an advanced level (e.g. master level) Computer Science course. The course is specifically aimed to the following student groups:
Computer Science master and doctoral students, and those students wish to include the course as a part of the selective advanced studies in computer science.
The implementation of the course
This a seminar course, students will be assigned reading and presentation tasks. The course will be like a small conference; teams present their assignment to the class. Student learn to form arguments and support them with facts; also learn to communicate coherently and courteously with those who disagree.
The students are required to complete a set of mandatory exercises during the course. The exercises will be graded and a general feedback will be given by the instructor of the course. The points collected from the exercises will determine the course grade. This course does not have a course exam.

Please note that maximum of 10 students will be accepted to take part in the course. The above mentioned student groups will have priority when students are selected to the course. If there is room in the course, also bachelor level students are able to join the course.
The detailed structure and content of the course will be announced in the beginning of the course. The course will consist of 4-5 study modules, which all include compulsory learning activities (e.g. exercises). Most of the activities will be done in groups.
